Unintended Consequences

Wall of fear
to keep out the pain,
laboriously erected
over the years.

Wall of unintended
consequence, glaring
both in and out, everything
denied. No distinction
of feeling, joy or sorrow
love or hate, all censored.

Fortifications soar so high
defeat even the light
of heaven, nothing to warm
the ice of frozen soul.

Long-ago lost inside
the cries of the child
cannot be heard
through the stones
of the impenetrable mask
suffocating the fearless,
terrified man.
